Identifying Signs of Bed Bug Infestations

Bed bugs are tiny and often hide in mattresses and under bedding, so they aren’t as easy to spot as other types of pests.

Typically, you do not even need to see the bugs themselves to know you have an infestation.

Bed bugs can be identified by the painful bites and itchy red welts they leave behind. You may also notice tiny dark red or brown blood spots on your sheets.

Bed bugs are often found on or near:

  • Beds and mattresses
  • Bedding
  • Bed frames or headboards
  • Electrical outlets
  • Other bedroom furniture
  • Pictures on the wall
  • Carpeting
  • Baseboards
  • Luggage

Our Ithaca bed bug control specialists have extensive training and knowledge of pest behavior to accurately identify bed bugs and other pests.

We start with a thorough inspection to verify the presence of bed bugs and get an idea about the extent of the problem.

We will explain your options for treatment and employ safe and effective methods that get rid of the infestation and can help prevent bed bugs from returning in the future.

Proven Bed Bug Eradication Techniques

One reason that bed bugs have experienced such rapid growth is the result of the pests developing a resistance to the pesticides that were previously used to treat infestations.

Bed bugs are also notoriously challenging to eradicate, but our highly trained and experienced pest control technicians are equipped to handle the job.

We find bed bugs wherever they are hiding and utilize the most effective treatment methods to eliminate them and help your family enjoy a peaceful and restful sleep again.

Don’t Wait to Treat a Bed Bug Problem

If you suspect that you may have a bed bug problem, it is important to call our team immediately. Bed bug populations grow extremely quickly, so waiting to deal with the problem can result in a much larger infestation that is more challenging to solve. We are available 24/7 to help with emergency situations.

While we are extremely thorough in our treatments, new bugs can still be carried into the house and start the process over again. Knowing how bed bugs get inside can help you avoid future problems.

Bed bugs are often encountered when staying in hotels and may hitch a ride home in your luggage. Don’t put suitcases on your bed and check the sheets and mattress for stains and signs of bed bugs when you stay in hotels.

Preventative Strategies to Keep Bed Bugs at Bay

Preventing a bed bug infestation involves a combination of proactive measures and regular vigilance. Bed bugs are notorious for their ability to hitchhike and spread rapidly, so it's crucial to be diligent in your efforts.

Here are some steps you can take to prevent a bed bug infestation:

  • Inspect Second-Hand Furniture: Before bringing used furniture into your home, thoroughly inspect it for signs of bed bugs. Check seams, folds, and any cracks or crevices.
  • Be Cautious While Traveling: Check hotel rooms for signs of bed bugs before settling in. Inspect the mattress, headboard, and nearby furniture. And keep your luggage on a luggage rack or elevated surface rather than placing it on the bed.
  • Regularly Launder and Clean Bedding: Wash your bedding, including sheets, pillowcases, and mattress covers, regularly in hot water. Dry on the highest heat setting if possible.
  • Use Bed Bug-Proof Mattress and Box Spring Encasements: Encase your mattress and box spring with bed bug-proof covers to prevent bed bugs from getting in or out.
  • Reduce Clutter: Minimize clutter in your home to reduce hiding spots for bed bugs. This makes it easier to detect and treat an infestation.
  • Seal Cracks and Crevices: Seal any cracks or crevices in walls, baseboards, and furniture to eliminate hiding spots for bed bugs.
  • Be Cautious with Second-Hand Clothing: Inspect second-hand clothing before bringing it into your home. Wash and dry the clothing on high heat if possible.
  • Educate Yourself: Learn about the signs of bed bug infestations, such as small reddish-brown bugs, tiny white eggs, and dark fecal stains on bedding.
  • Vacuum Regularly: Vacuum your home regularly, paying special attention to areas around and under the bed. Dispose of the vacuum bag or empty the canister outside of your home.
  • Monitor for Signs: Keep an eye out for signs of bed bugs, such as bites on your skin, tiny blood spots on sheets, or an unexplained musty odor.
  • Consult Professionals: If you suspect a bed bug infestation, consider hiring a professional pest control service to assess and address the issue.

Remember that early detection is key when dealing with bed bugs. If you do discover an infestation, it's essential to take prompt action to eliminate the problem before it worsens.

If you're uncertain about how to handle a potential infestation, consult with a pest control professional for guidance.
